Tips

How to Stay in a Lower Slab

  1. Track your meter mid-month — Check the reading around the 15th to estimate your trajectory.
  2. Reduce AC usage near slab boundaries — Even 1 degree higher on the thermostat saves significant units.
  3. Switch off standby appliances — TVs, chargers, and idle devices add up over a month.
  4. Use energy-efficient lighting — LED bulbs use 75% less electricity than incandescent ones.
  5. Shift heavy loads to off-peak hours — Washing machines, irons, and water pumps are cheaper to run during off-peak times.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a slab jump?

When your total monthly units cross into the next tariff bracket, all additional units are charged at a higher per-unit rate. This can cause a disproportionate increase in your bill.

Why does a small increase in units cause a big bill jump?

Because the higher slab rate applies to all additional units in that bracket. For example, going from 300 to 310 units means those 10 extra units are charged at Rs. 25.45 instead of Rs. 20.10.

How can I avoid crossing into a higher slab?

Monitor your meter reading mid-month. If you are close to a slab boundary, reduce AC usage, switch off unused appliances, and shift heavy loads to off-peak hours.

Does the slab system apply to all connection types?

The slab-based tariff system applies to residential consumers. Commercial and industrial connections have different rate structures, often with demand-based charges.
